Sanrizuka Goryo Ranch Memorial Hall

Title

Sanrizuka Goryo Ranch Memorial Hall Sanrizuka Goryo Bokujo Kinenkan
Memorie Photo

The rows of horse chestnut trees lining the roadside bring back memories of the days of the Imperial pastures.

Toshimichi Okubo, a dignitary of the Meiji reformation, founded the Imperial Pastures which are now administered by the Imperial Household Agency. The Imperial Pastures also functioned as a place for the development of the latest stock breeding techniques and in the past invited overseas stock breeders. In August 1969, the Imperial Pastures were moved to Tochigi prefecture to make way for the construction of Narita Airport. The Goryo Ranch Memorial Hall was built in the Sanrizuka Memorial Park to preserve the Imperial Pasture's 100 years of history. The exterior of the Museum has been reconstructed to resemble exactly the origional office of the Imperial Pasture. Displayed and preserved here are materials and articles relating to the Imperial family and stock breeding devices.

Sanrizuka Memorial Park covers an area of 30,000 sq. meters. At the center of this park are rows of giant horse chestnut trees leading visitors to the entrance of the museum. Every October, the trees drop chestnuts as big as pebbles. V.I.P. building

The V.I.P. building stands to the north of the chestnut tree rows. In the front yard there are monuments to Kotaro Takamura and Yoshu Mizuno both of whom are well known poets and both of whom had a deep relationship with Sanrizuka. The Emperor Kinjo stayed in this building when he was a student at Gakushuin Elementary school.
