Jinbei crossing as it once was |
There is a forest of tall pine trees, just in front of Jinbei bridge (Jinbei-ohashi) which spans Lake Imba. This place is called the Suijin-no-mori (Forest of Suijin) and there used to be a quay of ferry there.
Sakura Sogo who went to Edo (Tokyo) to appeal directly to the Shogun, rode a ferry from this crossing. It was named after Jinbei, the ferryman who took Sogo across the lake thus also breaking the prohibition law. |
Kabuki play of 'Jinbei crossing'
(Jinbei-watashi no ba)
There is no proof that Jinbei existed. However, it is said that he threw himself into the Lake Imba rather than be arrested. A stone monument has been erected for the repose of Jinbei's soul on the shore of the Lake Imba. |
