The ancient book, "Engishiki", written in the Heian Period, lists the name of this shrine in the fourth position, next to Katori Jingu shrine in the pages of "Kamna", where the names of shrines in every part of the country are written. The Kanto district's largest sugi (Japanese cedar) rises into the sky beside this shrine. This giant cedar, standing at the left of the main shrine, is 1,200 years old, measures 8 meters across at eye level, and rises 40 meters high. This tree is revered as a guardian of longevity and protector against evils. The woods surrounding the Makata Shrine is designated a precious natural product by Chiba Prefecture. |
