The Setsubun-e gathering

February |

The day before the beginning of spring in February, the bean scattering ceremony is performed in front of the main hall of Shinshoji temple for three times a day, to bring fertility to the five cereals. Usually, Yokozuna ( high ranking Sumo wrestler ) or famous Sumo wrestlers become men of the year. Wearing Kamishimo and Hakama ( traditional male dress), they throw beans towards worshippers and visitors and shout "Fuku wa uchi! Fuku wa uchi" (Come, fortune!)
Traditionally, people shout "Come, fortune. Go away, devil." at the bean scattering ceremony, but "Go away, devil." is omitted at the Narita-san Setsubun gathering. This omission is an old tradition.
Setsubun gathering is also held at Sogo Reido Sanctuary. |
